Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
Hailing from a season in which they were the defending back-to-back Stanley Cup champions, the Edmonton Oilers in 1985-86 would skate to a regular season record of 56-17-7 to win the Presidents Trophy with Mark Messier registering a total of 84 points in 63 games played. Offered here, is this stick used by Messier during the 1985-86 Oilers campaign. A Sher-Wood PMP 9030 mode that remains free from cracks or breaks, “Messier” and “11” appear on the upper shaft, with “11” also handwritten in black ink just above the name stamp. Retaining its original black tape job over both the handle/knob and blade, two small holes have been drilled into the top side of the shaft, most likely from having been displayed on a wall with eyelets or something similar. Exhibiting light-to-moderate game-use, small tears and puck marks are seen on both sides of the blade tape while a few other black marks are seen over the heel and lower shaft, particularly on the backhand side. The rest of the shaft shows varying marks and abrasions from top to bottom.
Additionally, to add to the beauty and appeal of the piece, the stick has been signed by 23 members of that years Oilers squad over the forehand side of the shaft in blue marker including; Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Andy Moog, Glenn Anderson, Paul Coffey, Kevin Lowe, Grant Fuhr, Charlie Huddy, Randy Gregg, Mark Napier, Dave Lumley, Dave Semenko, Don Jackson, Dave Hunter, Esa Tikanen, Randy Gregg, Dave Hunter, Charlie Huddy, Mike Krushelnyski, Jari Kurri and 3 others that are unable to be identified due to the signatures overlapping the dark factory graphics. All the autographs remain strong and legible with just light age fading to point out for accuracy.
