Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/3/2023
Picturing the boys of summer, the 1962 Shirriff baseball coins marketed in Canada are exceedingly rarer than the Salada Tea and Junket specimens released in the United States with the PSA Population Report confirming the remark, as over 15000 Salada coins have been graded by the company versus just shy of 1300 Shirriff examples. Offered here, is a near complete set (220/221) which includes both variations (Salada and Shirriff) with the bulk of the assembly being that of the rarer Shirriff variations (193 coins) over the small portion of Salada branded disks (27 coins). Missing just coin #30 of Jim Busby, coins included that feature the American Salada back are those of #’s; 2, 4, 6, 11, 18, 19, 26, 39 (includes Shirriff variation coin as well), 60, 66, 70, 73, 77, 79, 80, 84, 89, 104, 107, 116, 121, 130, 142, 148, 162, 171, 176 and 179. For the coins of more notable stars, 8-Ford, 23-Maris, 27-Yastrzemski, 33-Berra, 36-Killebrew, 40-B. Robinson, 41-Mantle, 64-Richardson, 67-Kaline, 95-Howard, 109-Koufax, 111-Matthews, 142-McCovey, 149-Mays, 150-Clemente, 165-F. Robinson, 175-Cepeda, 177-Banks, 180-Aaron and 215-Snider are all in higher/high grade conditions with the only flaws to note being a slight wrinkle on the Koufax at the right side and slight paper wear to the right border of Aaron. For the rest of the examples, all are largely in and around the same high grade condition range as the better ones listed above while a small number are affected by border wear, the worst of which is seen on coins #25, 58, 62 and 157.
