Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023

Long having been referred to as “Laval Dairy” cards and softly resembling the NHL cards produced by Parkhurst during the previous season and near direct copies of the Laval set from the previous season as well, the cards picturing the players toiling in the Quebec Senior Hockey League like the ones offered here were actually produced by Bedard & Donaldson Ltee. Believed to have been issued as an update to the 1951-52 set though appearing to be a standalone set of its own, offered here is this starter set of 1952-53 Laval Dairy cards that includes 61 of the 121 specimens that make up the checklist. Led value wise by a copy of card #92 of Jacques Plante, the desirable pre-rookie offering is the harder to find horizontal version instead of the vertical that will surely appeal to collectors. Featuring EX scope cards of #2 Jean Marois and #4 Jack Gelineau, the group includes mostly VG to VG-EX examples including those of #’s 8, 10, 12, 14, 25, 26, 36, 38, 39, 40, 44, 46, 50, 52, 55, 56, 57, 59, 65, 66, 67, 68, 70, 72, 81, 84, 85, 86, 89, 90, 94, 95, 97, 106, 108, 110, 111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 116, 117, 118, 119 and 120 while cards viewed as being in the neighbourhood of G to VG include 7, 13, 15, 29, 39, 53, 60, 61, 89, 98, 99, 104 and 121. Finished off with a copy of card #93 picturing Gerard Desaulniers that is in the condition range of GOOD, the group also includes extras of cards #39 (G to VG), #40 (VG to VG-EX), #44 (VG to VG-EX), #81 (VG to VG-EX), #84 (VG to VG-EX), #89 (x2 – both G to VG), #108 (VG to VG-EX) and #120 (VG to VG-EX) as well as two cards from the 1951-52 Laval Dairy initial release, #21 of Jacques Gagnon and #59 of Fernand Laliberte that are both around the vicinity of VG-EX to EX condition. A true treasure, folks in Montreal, Quebec, Ottawa, Sherbrooke, Valleyfield, Chicoutimi and Shawinigan got to see a high caliber of play thanks to these men.
