Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/2/2023
A lovely collection of intact 1930’s survivors that while small in quantity more than makes up for it in quality through this group of thirteen (13) 1934-35 Diamond Match silver and one (1) 1936-39 tan hockey matchbook covers that remain mostly intact and largely seem complete. For the 1934-35 examples, an all-star lineup is present including issues for William Kendall (x2), George Mantha, Lloyd Gross (x3), Chuck Gardiner, Aurele Joliat, Bill Brydge, Hal Picketts (x2), Wildor Larochelle and Duke Dutkowski. For the tan 1936-39 specimen, the lone representative is that of William Haynes. Mostly sporting blue tipped matches, with the example of Larochelle being the only exception, all seemingly retain all their matches with only a couple having what appears to be some having been used at one point in time. In terms of condition, all the books remain in fantastic shape and display with good colours and graphics while only showing light handling wear to the surfaces and some light wear around the edges. For the staples, all are virtually rust free with the 1936-39 tan book of Haynes being the only one showing rusting. Additionally, a 1960s Maple Leaf Gardens matchbook is also included with the collection. Displaying an image of the famous hockey cathedral over the front with “Home of the Toronto Maple Leafs” below it, a Leafs logo is found on the back while only a small number of matches are missing from the interior. Condition remains good with light wear to the cover and edges. A fascinating group, we’re sure these will light the fire of our lucky winning bidder.
