Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023

Complete pre-war hockey card sets deservedly always garner considerable interest, with William Paterson’s 1924-25 issue offered here and featuring 60 cards, up from the company’s inaugural set (of 40). Although close to half of the cards (27), including most of the top ten most important/valuable, are affected by writing on the back, with three others featuring paper loss and another three with “CANCELLED” on the reverse, no heavy creases or other real unsightly flaws are observed. Some of the writing is simply the player’s position or updated status (“released 1924”, “sold to New York”, “traded to Boston” and the like), with the back of Georges Vezina’s (otherwise VG+) card reading, “goal – forced to retire on account of illness 1925. Died 1926” and that of Boston goalie Hek Fowler informing, “goal – released for quitting in a game 1924-25.” The set’s key Howie Morenz card has “centre” written and is but P with paper loss front and back, while that of King Clancy is an attractive VG-EX contributor, with “defence” on the reverse. Other notables with writing but otherwise in the VG to VG+ range are 1-Ironstone RC, 5-H. Smith RC, 7-Denneny and 10-Connell RC. The aforementioned trio with a stamped “CANCELLED” are 12-Randall, 50-Mantha and 54-Dye, while with paper loss are 35-Cain, 41-Berlinquette and 49-Sprague Cleghorn. And now, to the condition leaders (27), led by 48-Aurele Joliat’s card at EX and including mostly crease-free examples in the VG+ to EX+ range. The lineup includes 2-G. Boucher, 13-Burch, 14-Shorty Green, 32-Benedict, 37-Rothschild RC, 51-Noble, 58-Corbeau, 59-Broadbent and 60-Jackson. A few lesser lights include 6-Nighbor and 53-Adams. Please review the riveting and (at times) haunting images and decide whether these tempting relics will soon be contributing (splendidly!) to your pre-war repertoire.
