Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023

Likely done in response to the popularity of Bee Hive and Crown Brand pictures at the time, O-Pee-Chee switched up its size format for their 1939-40 V-301-1 release, making the cards to the dimensions of 5” x 7”, the premiums were released in cello packs housing one photo meaning a complete set was difficult to put together. Sure to be an eyebrow raising lot for those that seek out vintage cards as well as autographs, up for grabs here is this lot consisting of twenty-eight (28) 1939-40 O-Pee-Chee V-301-1 vintage-signed hockey cards of Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers players. Largely in a condition scope of G to VG with some better examples include as well as some that are worse off, those that fall below that common grade range are mostly due to flaws such as staining, creases and/or pencil marks while all of the cards/photos show even moderate toning. Additionally, some show evidence of one having been housed in a photo album at their corners. Stated by the original owner to all have been signed by the players as they went into Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, the autographs are signed in a mix of fountain pen and pencil with all remaining nice and legible while just a small number of those that are included display lighter due to the age of the signatures. Paced by examples of deceased HOFers including Syl Apps (VG to VG-EX – strong pencil autograph), Sweeny Shriner (G to VG – small stain on reverse – strong pencil signature), Gord Drillon (G to VG – small corner ding and some surface marks on the front and reverse, signs of having been in an album – strong pencil signature), Red Horner (VG – strong front – bold and strong pencil signature), Lynn Patrick (G to VG – fountain pen ink signature), Bryan Hextall RC (VG-EX to EX – fountain pen signature), Clint Smith (VG – small marks at top edge and light corner wear – bold black ink signature) and Neil Colville (FR to G – stains over the front and reverse – fountain pen ink signature). For the rest of the cards, examples present include the likes of Maple Leafs players; Bucko McDonald (pencil signature with some lightness – large crease and a couple of stains), Pep Kelly (black ink signature), Murph Chamberlain (pencil signature – a couple of small stains), Pete Langelle RC (black ink signature - stains), Bingo Kampman RC (pencil signature – stain at left border and photo album evidence), Walter Stanowsky RC (black ink signature), Jack Church RC (black ink signature – on the lighter side – light photo album evidence and a small stain on the reverse), Nick Metz (lighter pencil signature – stains), Bob Heron RC (pencil signature – light edge wear), Gus Marker (pencil signature), Hank Goldup RC (pencil signature), Bob Davidson (pencil signature – stains) and Reg Hamilton (pencil signature – stains, edge wear and photo album evidence) as well as Rangers players (generally a bit better off condition wise than their Maple Leafs counterparts); Murray Patrick RC (fountain pen ink signature), Ott Heller (oxidized fountain pen ink signature – stain over the bottom right corner on the front), Phil Watson (black pen ink signature – lightly smudged – surface wear on the reverse), Kilby MacDonald RC (fountain pen ink signature), Alex Shibicky (fountain pen ink signature), Alf Pike RC (fountain pen ink signature) and Mac Colville (fountain pen ink signature). A fabulous chance to grab not only some desirable pre-war cardboard, but some pre-war signatures as well from some of the best to ever play and influence the game!
