Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/13/2022
Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1962, Nels Stewart was the first player to win the NHL's Hart Trophy multiple times, and is considered the NHL's greatest goalscorer in the pre-World War II era, holding the league record for career goals from 1937 to 1952. The subject of this original artwork done by Lou Skuce, Stewart is displayed in his Montreal Maroons uniform. Measuring approx. 22 ½” x 28 ½” and housed in a simple black wooden frame that shows heavy wear, the artwork, in comic book style, displays Stewart’s NHL goal total of 323 (it was actually 324) at the top and nickname of “Old Poison” off to the one side with imagery of Stewart stirring up a cauldron. Other imagery/artwork is featured on the piece, that originally hung in Toe Blake’s tavern, with Skuce having signed and dated the piece in the bottom right-hand corner. The art shows toning and staining around the edges including liquid damage.
