Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/13/2022
Still regarded as the greatest hockey player to ever play the game, Wayne Gretzky posted 137 points in his first NHL season of 1979-80, earning him the Hart Trophy as the league’s MVP. Hailing from that historic first season, is this collection of three (3) 1979-80 Edmonton Oilers J.D. McCarthy postcards picturing the young hockey phenom with two having been graded by PSA. The first slabbed example, showing The Great One in black and white, measures approx. 3 ¼” x 5 ½” and has earned a grade of NM 7. Showing wear to the top two corners on the front, the card has smooth edges and clean surfaces. The other graded example has once again earned a NM 7 and that time is in full colour. Measuring approx. 3 3/8 x 5 ¼”, all four corners on the front side show light wear touches as do the edges with the back remaining clean despite light toning. Lastly, is an ungraded example that is similar to the slabbed black-and-white postcard from earlier. At 3 ¼” x 5 ½”, the postcard remains in good condition with touches of wear to all four corners but retaining clean edges. The back shows light toning while a facsimile signature of Gretzky’s is seen partially cut off on the left side. Sure to enhance any Gretzky collection, the PSA holders show scratches and scuffs to both sides.
