Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
After coming out of nowhere, so to speak, to heroically backstop the Montreal Canadiens to the franchise’s 23rd Stanley Cup championship in the spring of 1986, Patrick Roy likely seemed like an appropriate/obvious choice to the deciders at O-Pee-Chee to appear on the company’s ’86-87 hockey card display boxes. With seemingly never enough supply to meet demand, the pictured Roy rookie card is the likes of which you’ll be hoping for if you decide to go searching through some or all of the 48 packs contained within. They’re seven-card affairs and have been guaranteed as not having been searched by unopen specialist Baseball Card Exchange. BBCE’s shrink-wrap surrounds the box and affixed to the underside are the company’s stickers and certification number. Mario Lemieux second-year cards are also possible with the image of such card pictured on the side panel while the box bottom cards feature the likes of Larry Robinson, Denis Savard, Brian Sutter and Bryan Trottier. Overall, the box remains in good condition with wear present to the edges and corners on both the bottom and bottom while retaining its colours on the side and box top. Of note, the scotch tape seal on the front has been popped and there are two additional scotch tape pieces that have been added to the side of the top lid which also shows some indentations at the perforations seen above the Roy card image. Displaying the set’s most coveted card on top of the box, you gotta love ’86-87 boxes – good luck with this infrequently offered jackpot.
