Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022

Hailing from the era of the Original Six and what many consider the golden age of hockey, we offer this beautiful wool WHL Victoria Cougars jersey worn by Joe Evans during the 1952-53 season that has been consigned by the Evans family. Evans played seven seasons in the old Pacific Coast Hockey League (PCHL) including three for the Cougars from 1949 to 1952 and joined them for their first WHL season in 1952-53 from which this jersey is from. Listed as wearing number “15” in programs of the era, a newspaper clipping from one of Evans' hockey scrapbooks shows Lester Patrick showing the Cougars' new uniform (this style of jersey) to a young fan with the title of the article reading "Exhibition Game Opens 1952-53 Hockey Season". Void of any labeling on the interior, the jersey measures out to a size “46”. Styled over the front with a felt Cougars team crest, that shows only light wear, with chainstitched embroidery near the edge under a tie-up collar, Evans’ number “15” is found over the left breast and reverse in white felt numbers, affixed with a zig-zag sewing pattern. Decorated with small holes throughout including a cluster found at each shoulder, with the cuffs remaining intact, team repairs are situated over the front (7), reverse (9), left sleeve (10) and right sleeve (3). Remaining otherwise beautiful condition for its age, the jersey shows additional wear through staining over the front above the team crest, cuffs and lower white hem stripe with rust staining present on the collar lace as well.
