Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/13/2022
Those who were somehow able to avoid the temptation of “cracking” boxes and cases of O-Pee-Chee’s “Premier” product of 1990-91 are nowadays surely pleased, with a case containing 24 unopened boxes on the auction block here for those who like the thought of GEM MT 10 and other possibilities. The big box will no doubt excite and provoke and we do not believe we need to spell things out for the majority, but here’s the deal for those who have not been following along the past three decades: During the hockey card boom years, O-Pee-Chee’s “Premier” issue, with improved card stock and overall quality, made a big boom in 1990-91, with collectors hurriedly buying up packs and boxes and store owners having a tough time keeping sufficient stock. The 132-card set stars the rookie cards of now-legends Jaromir Jagr and Sergei Fedorov, while the RC lineup (of 58) also features fellow Hall of Famers Mike Modano, Rob Blake and Mats Sundin, with Jeremy Roenick, Curtis Joseph, Peter Bondra, Alexander Mogilny and Owen Nolan RCs also contributing and accompanied by the likes of Gretzky, Lemieux, Roy, Yzerman, Hull, Sakic and other stars. While no longer factory sealed, the case comes from the same consignor who has consigned a sealed case in each of our past two auctions with the same ''Beech Bros Ltd.'' stamping on the top of the box. The case shows light dings, creasing to the top cardboard flaps and corner wear, with one of the bottom corners having a rip to the first layer. The tape on the bottom of the case remains sealed while one of the ends of the box has come unglued at one side. The boxes inside all show in excellent condition with the top four showing light edge/corner and surface wear.
