Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/13/2022
Fans of hockey cards from the late-1960s and early-‘70s will be enticed by the pleasing 1969-70 O-Pee-Chee specimens offered here, with the cards and bonus inserts looking like they’ve had but one owner who sure didn’t handle/look at them very often, the first-rate surfaces among the pleasing aspects. There are minimal intermittent/notable exceptions, with EX+, EX-MT, EX-MT+ and NM-or-better examples accounting for the vast majority and we’d say NM-or-better cards may just dominate – very little wear is observed on the tell-tale blue-bordered backs, with the mostly unblemished surfaces also noteworthy. An EX-MT Tony Esposito rookie is actually joined by three Serge Savard RCs (EX-MT, EX+, EX), with two Bobby Orr specials at EX-MT+ (209-Norris Trophy) and EX+ (OC)(MC)) (212-All-Star) and Bobby’s regular (#24) issue amid the exceptions at VG+, similar to 207-Plante/Hall Vezina, while 1-Worlsey is VG. Gordie Howe representatives include 215-All-Star, graded 8.5 NMM+ by KSA, a (raw) duplicate (NM+ (OC)), his regular issue (EX+) and a (no number) Mr. Hockey card at EX+. The appealing unmarked checklists are EX+ (31-2nd Series) and EX (132-1st Series), while there is no evidence of any stamp inserts ever being affixed to the appropriate card backs. There is duplication among (15) sharp (mostly EX-MT to NM+) 4-in-1 inserts, with our images telling of the lineup, and ditto for 15 near-perfect mini-card albums. Three PSA-graded entries are in the mix, including 186-Pat Quinn RC at NM-MT 8 and two NM 7s; 5-J.C. Tremblay and 98-Lacroix. In summary, a type of ’69-70 OPC field day is what can be anticipated here.
