Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023

Multiple intriguing aspects are to tell you about here – attentive reading is suggested – with the desirable Bobby Orr rookie card that headlines this 1967-67 Topps set appearing, at first glance, far superior to the VG 3 assessment it recently received at PSA headquarters. With near-perfect centering, minimal corner wear and original-looking gloss, famous card #35 has a grade-lowering vertical scratch that rises up from the bottom edge to reach Bobby’s chin. Possibly a production flaw as similar and somewhat-like lines/indentations are observed on 20 other cards, with notables being 13-Sawchuk, 31-Sinden RC, 80-Horton, 109-Howe and four All-Stars, including 124-Mikita. It’s debatable whether a small extremely subtle wrinkle (or two) is on the reverse of the Orr RC – difficult to determine through the holder. As for the raw rest, fabulous unblemished and bright surfaces are striking, with cards showing only light corner touches/wear dominating. We’d say a majority of EX-MT-or-better representatives can be anticipated, with NM-or-better submission candidates to zero-in on. Obviously assembled back in the day, take note that all cards exhibit a pronounced curvature, as shown in our images. Two alluring unmarked checklists are EX and EX+ in our book, although both can be deemed miscut. A dozen examples with a conventional crease and/or wear include 21-Francis RC, 23-Giacomin, 125-Hull All-Star and 132-Rousseau AS. As with all ’66-67 Topps sets, it’s mostly about Bobby, with however the supporting cast of friends and foes in this case upping the allure considerably. No scratches to the PSA holder of the Orr RC are to report.
