Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
Well remembered for the uniquely-painted masks worn with Cleveland and Minnesota, Gilles Meloche began his NHL career with two games played for Chicago in 1970-71, followed by 17 seasons of backstopping four clubs. This lot features an original mask made by maker extraordinaire Greg Harrison. One of two masks made by Harrison for Meloche with Minnesota, this example with vintage paint job was the second one made and it served as a "game ready" back-up. We are not sure if it was ever worn in any games, and although the mask does exhibit some wear, it possibly occurred during practices. With the strapping and back plate intact, there is a "Made in Canada" sticker to the interior, blank label, and residue from a former label, with Harrison adding a later black marker signature. As mentioned, the mask shows some wear including a few marks. Once displayed at the Hall of Fame in Toronto, an LOA from Greg Harrison will accompany. Period masks of this quality rarely surface.
