Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/28/2023
A shining light in otherwise hockey-desolate West Virginia, the Wheeling Nailers began life as the Winston-Salem Thunderbirds in 1981, originally playing in the now-defunct ACHL. A number of relocations have occurred throughout their existence, with the Thunderbirds becoming the Nailers in 1996. The club also accomplished a first place North Division finish in 2003-04. This lot offers a pair game-worn Nailers jerseys, including an alternate captain's example worn by Andrew Orpik in 2010-11, and a second jersey #7 "Collins" originating from 2005-08. SP labeling and a Pro sizing tags sit along each collar, with SP and ECHL crests over the reverse bottom hem. Styled with a Jasonesque hockey mask team crest - reminiscent of the Friday the 13th protagonist - with crossed spikes along with “Nailers Wheeling” embroidered below, tri-colour tackle twill sleeve and verso numbers have been utilized, with sponsorship patches over both the front and reverse along with a Pittsburgh Penguins crest over the right shoulder. Both jerseys show light use including a few marks to the front and sleeves, with the Orpik also sporting burn marks to the sleeves as well as a few tiny holes. Players named "Collins" that wore the #7 jersey include both Brian and Sean Collins in 2005-06, and Brian again in 2006-07 and 2007-08.
