Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/13/2022
Fanatical collectors of pre-war hockey cards will welcome the opportunity here to secure a scarce regional set of elusive, almost-century-old cards, produced by Winnipeg’s Crescent Ice Cream firm. The relics picture members of the Selkirk Fishermen, a squad that competed in the Manitoba Senior Hockey League. These (black and white) examples are from the first of a two-season promotion (sepia tone cards also exist), when consumers were invited to assemble a complete 14-card set, exchangeable for a brick of ice cream, with one card (#6-Cecil Browne) reportedly short-printed so as to reduce the number of prizes. A respectable lower grade ensemble is offered here, with four cards displaying superior to the rest, with only a light subtle crease and corner/edge wear; 2-Jack Hughes, 5-W. Roberts, 10-Cliff O’Meara and 12-Pete Speirs, with the latter two players later suiting up for the Winnipeg Maroons. A swell indoor view of the Fishermen on the ice and one of team president Peter Meurer are also present, with no real unsightly low grade “pictures” to report (although two have back damage) – these will be splendid additions to your vintage card shrine.
