Some of the hardest images to locate for any of the four major North American sports, early hockey team photos are scarce, especially the closer you get to the turn of the century. Here we have a collection of 4 photos spanning from 1928-29 until 1953-54. Leading off, the earliest photo hails from 1928-29 and shows the Wolves – winners of the Nelson Junior Hockey League. Measuring 9 ¼” x 7 ¼”, the photo is mounted under a grey cardboard matte, with full dimensions of 14” x 12”, displaying embossed year, team and league information at the top with team members underneath the image. The photo displays well with light surface wear and scratches with a crease near the bottom extending from the middle of the image to the right edge. The matte shows toning and liquid stains in areas as well as a crease that follows the one of the image, edge and corner wear. A similar image of the same club and league is found for the 1935-36 season that is displayed under a similar matte. Condition is much better on this one with no flaws to the image with the matte exhibiting liquid staining along with edge and corner wear as well as a crease near at the right-hand corner of the picture. Next is an image of the Maulers Hockey Club of 1931-32 with players names at the bottom. The picture measures approx. 9 ½” x 7 ½” and is mounted in a light grey folder with a matte over top while displaying well with only light surface wear near the right-hand edge. Full measurements of the folder are approx. 12” x 10 ¾” with edge and corner wear, creasing, small tears and liquid stains present with red and blue coloured stains found on the front and back covers as well. Lastly, is an image of the 1953-54 Toronto Marlboros taken by famed Toronto hockey photographer, Turofsky. Measuring 13 ¾” x 10 ¾” and mounted on a cream white backing, full dimensions come out to 20” x 16”. The both the photograph and backing show heavy wear with a crease going horizontally through the middle of the piece as well as vertically. Tears are marks are found on both the photo and backing with a part of the bottom left of the backing torn away with a blue blemish seen nearby. Corner and edge wear are present as well. “Turofsky Photo” is penned underneath the image at the right-hand corner and remains of a stamp is found on the back.
