1970s O-Pee-Chee hockey action is up for grabs here as part of this lot consisting of complete 1976-77, 1977-78 and 1978-79 sets as well as a complete 1977-78 O-Pee-Chee WHA set that showcases the players of the rival league. Leading off with the ’76-77 set that displays in a mix of conditions but is largely in the range of EX with some lower grades scattered throughout, card #115, Bryan Trottier’s rookie offering paces the group, presenting in the vicinity of VG-EX/EX condition with corner and edge wear. Accented with star cards of 22-Salming (EX/EX-MT), 70-Clarke (VG – Creases), 163-Lafleur (EX/EX-MT), 200-Dryden (EX/EX-MT) and 213-Orr (G/VG – Creases and corner wear), four of the team checklist cards have been marked with one of the two main checklists marked as well and in VG/EX range with the other around EX-MT.
The ’77-78 set is a consistent high-grade EX-MT assembly with many EX-MT/NM examples as well. Not necessarily loaded up with rookie cards, stars make up for that with those of 115-Clarke and 200-Lafleur in the range of EX-MT/NM condition and 100-Dryden plus 251-Orr (80-20 centering) around the scope of EX-MT. The checklist cards are all unmarked with two in the range of EX-MT with the other a tad worse off at EX. Of note, 17 of the 18 team checklist cards are marked while the glossy insert set, that is also included, features many EX-MT/NM examples.
The 1978-79 ensemble, a mostly EX-MT/NM grouping that displays humidity warping, is paced by The rookie card of the late, great Mike Bossy at card #115 in a similar EX-MT/NM condition. Other cards from the set that are in mirroring condition include 50-Dryden, 90-Lafleur, 215-Clarke, 300-Orr and 353-Taylor (RC) while card 330-Dryden All-Star is in the vicinity of EX-MT with OPC’s rough cut observed and 143-Federko (RC) is also around EX-MT with 80-20 centering and a bottom right corner ding. The first five (5) cards show water damage or marks while all three checklist cards have been marked.
Lastly, the ’77-78 WHA set remains in a high-grade EX-MT/NM condition range with highlights of 1-Howe, 50-Hull and 61-Mahovlich in the same condition scope. Complete at 132-cards, the checklist listing each remains unmarked and is in a condition that is uniform to the rest of the set while many of the cards are slightly off-center on the back top-to-bottom.
