Known to modern hockey adherents as the namesake of the NHL trophy awarded to the player who leads the league in points at the end of the regular season, Art Ross was one of the most skilled players of the early-1900s, combining stalwart defensive abilities with aggressive physical play and an unmatched hockey IQ. Ross would lead the Kenora Thistles and Montreal Wanderers to Stanley Cup championships, and would famously serve as the first coach of the Boston Bruins, staying with the club in one capacity or another for over 30 years. From his time as the Bruins’ guru, we offer a Maple Leaf Gardens receipt signed by the legendary hockey mind, along with a matching note. Dated April 14, 1951, the receipt is in the total of $7,500.00 (just over $85,000.00 in 2022 dollars), with the amount for the “balance of contract of P Maloney”. Ross has signed in black ink, and the signature is flawless, with just light handling wear to the receipt itself. The accompanying note – also dated April 14th, has typed text that states that Conn Smythe spoke to Ross, with the Bruins chief agreeing to take $7,500.00 for Maloney’s contract, with additional handwritten info claiming that “Ross later said he meant the equivalent of the US in Canadian”. The note also sports just toning and light handling wear, with staple holes to each item. Born in 1885 in Montreal's Westmount neighborhood, Ross was enshrined in 1949, and passed away in 1964 at age 79. A Classic Auctions LOA will accompany.
