Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/13/2022
Arguably one of the most fabled and legendary players in both the complete history of the Montreal Canadiens and the earlier days of the game itself, Howie Morenz was a true contemporary superstar, filling endless venues while dominating the sport. Combining with the premier hockey stick maker of the early-1900s, we have a McNiece & Orchard one-piece mini-stick signed by the deceased icon. At 25” in total length and utilizing the matching company logo in script which appeared on their early sticks across both sides of the blade, Morenz has signed the upper shaft in dark fountain pen ink, with the “ORENZ” of “MORENZ” somewhat worn/bleeding. Despite the very minor condition issue, the rare signature projects masterfully, and will serve as a quality specimen. A second McNiece & Orchard mini-stick is also included, circa 1940s, with numerous autographs that are worn and completely undecipherable. A Classic Auctions LOA will accompany this signed prize.
Producing sticks for Stanley Cup championship clubs including the 1898 Victorias, 1900 Shamrocks, 1906 Wanderers and others, players using McNiece and Orchard sticks included George Vezina, Sprague Cleghorn, Newsy Lalonde, Frank McGee, Lester Patrick, Percy LeSueur, Clint Benedict, Eddie Shore and many others.
