Coming off of a phenomenal rookie season that him win the Calder Memorial Trophy as the National Hockey League’s rookie of the year, Auston Matthews had an equally impressive sophomore season despite missing 20 games over the course of the year, registering 63 points in 62 games played. Hailing from the 2017-18 season, we offer this stick used by Matthews during game 2 of the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs versus the Boston Bruins. A Bauer Nexus 1N model with “Matthews” factory graphics over the shaft, the lower shaft has been blacked-out, common for this model of stick used by Matthews his first couple NHL seasons. Retaining its original white tape job present over the blade with the original black finished with white wrapping retained over the knob/handle as well, a handwritten “34” is seen over the front side in black ink while a small hand drawn cross has been added to the back of the handle as well. Exhibiting light-to-moderate game-use, puck marks are seen over the blade tape on both sides with numerous marks/abrasions present over the lower shaft and heel. Additionally, Matthews has added an annotation reading “PO G2” in black ink on the underside of the upper shaft with Getty Image #946379424 (April 14th, 2018 vs Boston – ECQF Game 2) appearing to show a match to the notation penned on the stick offered here but it is not clear enough for us to call a definite photo-match. Acquired directly from the team, a Toronto Maple Leafs LOA will accompany the piece.
