Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022

Playing home games at Madison Square Garden, the New York Golden Blades enjoyed just a single season in the WHA in 1973-74, and due to a terrible lease and low attendance, control of the club was taken over by the league mid-way through the season. As such, any Golden Blades jerseys are quite rare, and we offer a specimen worn by Wayne Rivers, who played 73 games during the club’s lone season. Produced by noted maker Gerry Cosby, the complete set of Blades uniforms were sold to Verona Sports when the club left NY and went to New Jersey to become the Knights. The jerseys were then stripped of their Cosby labeling and replaced with Verona Sports tags, and were used by their hockey team for many years before they began to be purchased by collectors. Currently void of either labeling, the durene jersey measures-out to a size “54”. Styled with a lightning bolt-blade team crest fully administered in tackle twill, the durene V-neck sweater has been accented with “12” sewn to the sleeves and verso in dual-colour tackle twill. No nameplate is present, but the silhouette of the individually sewn on letters spelling “Rivers” can been seen, with no clear evidence of a former arched nameplate that was added to most of these jerseys after they were recycled visible. Featuring a garter style fight strap on the interior, the jersey sports moderate-to-heavy wear with a good portion likely occurring after the jersey was recycled (lots of equipment staining is seen on shoulders inside of the jersey). Stick marks are seen throughout the body and sleeves of the jersey with repairs present to the collar, sleeves, front and reverse as well as the upper reverse from when the letters of Rivers’ name were removed. Also showing board burns, staining and discolouration throughout, puckering is seen the team crest and numbers with damage seen to the yellow layer of twill on the back number “2”. Unrepaired holes are also exhibited on the lower back and left sleeve.
