Replacing the NHL's All-Star festivities for the 1978–79 NHL season, the 1979 Challenge Cup featured the Soviet Union national ice hockey team taking on a squad of NHL All-Stars in three contests at Madison Square Garden, on February 8th, 10th, and 11th. This 1979 Challenge Cup NHL All-Stars jersey was worn by the 1993 HHOF inductee and five-time Stanley Cup champion, Steve Shutt. With a large Cosby label with “48” sizing tightly affixed to the inner collar, the vintage durene feature’s an embroidered NHL shield team crest, with matching additional crests over each shoulder with Shutt’s number “22” sewn to the custom-shortened sleeves and verso in orange-over-black layered tackle twill. “Shutt” appears affixed directly over the upper reverse in individual black twill letters with embroidered orange trim, with no fight strap utilized on the interior.
Seeing action in game 1 and 2 of the series and registering an assist in game 1, the jersey shows moderate use with stick marks seen over the front and backside of the left sleeve as well as a faint red board paint transfer over the back at the right armpit. Varying degrees of staining is also present throughout the entirety of the garment. We should further note that glue was used to affix each crest/patch before being sewn – common for garments of the era, with the glue visible through the material when viewing the interior of the jersey. Accompanied by his signed LOA, the jersey also comes with an additional LOA as well as a MeiGray LOA and COR.
