The most valuable player at the 1984 Canada Cup tournament, John Tonelli would spend 14 seasons in the NHL shared amongst a number of clubs, with the winger best remembered as an integral component to the Islanders Stanley Cup dynasty that won four straight between 1980 and 1983. Presented here, is this New York Islanders jersey worn by Tonelli during the 1985-86 season, and it’s been photo-matched. Made by CCM, labeling from the company showing a faint handwritten “50” sizing designation in black pen, is affixed to the collar over a born-on date tag reading “85 01”, with a CCM logo patch sewn to the reverse hem. The front of the jersey is decorated with the Islanders crest in layered tackle twill with Tonelli’s number “27” sewn to the sleeves and verso in white-over-orange tackle twill. Showing heavy pilling on the interior as well as a customized fight strap with the ribbon style replaced with the snap variation, the jersey exhibits excellent game-wear. Heavy stick marks are seen over the sleeves, front and reverse with board burns, paint transfers, team repairs and unrepaired repaired holes also seen. A large board burn/tear is also observed to the back of the left shoulder. Regarding the aforementioned photo-matches, Getty Image #1423629787 has been matched to the big black marks over the “N” in “NY” on the front crest, as well as to #85864283 (November 25th, 1985 vs Boston) which is matched to the triangular shaped stick mark in the white stripe directly under the “27” on the right sleeve.
