Coming off their third consecutive Stanley Cup, Guy Lapointe and the Montreal Canadiens would claim a fourth straight at the end of the 1978-79 season with Lapointe registering 55 points in 69 games played during the regular season and 8 points in 10 games played during the playoffs. Lapointe would only play in the Quarterfinals against Toronto and Semifinals against Boston as the defenseman was injured in the 3rd period of the 7th game vs the Bruins and would subsequently miss the Cup Finals against the New York Rangers. A Wilson label with “48” sizing is affixed to the collar, with a “78” year swatch placed just above the inside hem. Styled with the famous Canadiens “CH” team crest fully administered in layered tackle twill, Lapointe’s number “5” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in matching material, with “Lapointe” spelt across the affixed nameplate in single layer white twill letters. Of note, there is evidence of the nameplate having been removed and then sewn back on by the club, something that was common in the era. A garter style fight strap is found on the interior.
The jersey exhibits good game-use with black stick marks seen over the front as well as both sleeves while board burns are seen are seen in the same areas with one on both the right sleeve and under the team crest resulting in a small unrepaired hole. The jersey shows no fewer than six (6) team repairs with four (4) on the front, including a large one at the collar/neck, and two (2) on the reverse. The interior of the jersey shows light pilling at the elbows and shoulders area.
Regarding the photo-matches, Getty Images #542147268 (May 8, 1979 Semifinals Game #6 vs Boston) shows the slightly angled middle portion of the "5" of the back in correlation with the white striping while an undated included numeric image vs the Boston Bruins is showing the long diagonal black mark in the lower portion of the team's crest, the image also shows the correct placement for the number "5" on the left sleeve and of the team's crest. An additional second undated included numeric image vs the Boston Bruins is showing the correct placement of the number "5" on the left sleeve in correlation with the upper and lower white stripes and the elbow's red threading on its right. A MeiGray Vintage LOA will accompany the piece.
