Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023

Regarded as one of the most iconic trading cards, Wayne Gretzky’s #18 rookie card from the 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee and Topps sets is a must-have for hockey card collectors of all ages. This is one of the hottest cards in the hobby today. For 40 years, generations of collectors have coveted Gretzky’s rookie card and it remains by far the most-desired hockey card of the 1980s. There was no telling at the time that The Great One would accomplish so much in the game and this card has remained consistently popular. Having garnered a mark of VGE 4 from the graders at KSA, this particular copy of Gretzky’s first-year cardboard displays with 95-5 centering right-to-left on the front and left-to-right on the reverse while the colours remain vivid. Avoiding O-Pee-Chee’s commonly seen rough cut edges all the way around, light wear is seen at all four corners including a small ding at the top right. Additionally, some wear/paper loss is seen on the back of the card, possibly from being pressed into a photo album based on the patterns. The KSA holder shows light scratches and scuffs over both sides worth mentioning for accuracy.
It must be noted that the grading standards followed by KSA may not correspond to those currently employed by PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of this piece through any of those services, then, would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
