Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/28/2023
One of the all-time greatest players in the history of the National Hockey League, with his skill set and ferocious play seldomly ever being matched, the late great Bobby Hull earned endless hardware throughout his HOF career including the Lester Patrick, Hart Memorial and Lady Byng, along with a trio of Art Ross Trophies. Hailing from the 1965-66 season that saw him pot 54 goals and be awarded the Hart and Art Ross Trophy’s at years end, we offer this stick used by “The Golden Jet” that comes to us with excellent provenance.
Consigned to us by the godson of former Maple Leafs captain, Jim Thompson, whos parents were friends with Hull, the stick being offered was gifted by Hull to our consignor after the March 19th 1966 game vs the Maple Leafs in Toronto (a newspaper clipping relating to this fact is seen in the photos). Of note, it is unknown if the stick was used in that March 19th game, in which Hull didn't score, or in a game shortly before that when Hull scored his record-setting 51st goal of the season on March 12th, his record-setting 52nd on March 13th or his record-setting 53rd on March 16th.
A Northland Custom Pro “Glass Fused” model, “B. Hull” is stamped to the shaft with Bobby’s number “9” handwritten near the top in faded black marker. Featuring additional stamps from team supplier Gunzo’s over each side, the stick retains its original black tape over the shaved handle/knob with the blade tape having been removed. Exhibiting good game-use, dark black marks are seen throughout the shaft, mostly on the lower portion and the heel, as are red and blue colored marks as well. Featuring partially intact accent striping at the lower shaft, the blade shows cracks as well as a chip at the bottom near the heel on the forehand side. Additionally, wear is seen on the underside of the blade that may not be related to game-use. A special item with a fantastic backstory, a signed LOA from our consignor will accompany the piece.
