Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022

A four-time Stanley Cup champion with Toronto, and first signed by the club at 16, the late Jim Thomson made his lasting mark on the game as one of the individuals that helped organize the eventual players' union, along with Ted Lindsay. Seen as disloyal by Leafs' owner Conn Smythe, Thomson announced to the press that his playing days in Toronto were over, and he was traded to Chicago for a final NHL campaign after a dozen seasons with the Leafs. This Toronto Maple Leafs wool sweater was worn by Thomson during the early-1950s. Sporting a Doug Laurie label affixed to the inside hem, the vintage wool measures-out to roughly a size 46. Featuring the iconic maple leaf team crest in thick blue felt with "Toronto Maple Leafs" appliqued, a large "2" in matching blue felt is attached to the reverse with a zig-zag sewing pattern - common for the era. We should note that Thomson starting serving as alternate captain with the Leafs in 1953-54, and with no evidence of a former "A", the sweater would date prior to that season. Exhibiting prolonged wear, there are numerous small holes from use along with moth holes throughout, with areas that show the blue colouration bleeding into the material, including over the cuffs and collar. Team repairs are also present, with single examples situated over the front and right sleeve. The included LOA is from our consignor who's godfather was Jim Thompson.
