Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
The landscape of the National Hockey League changed on October 16th, 1946 without many even knowing it at the time. The date marks the first time that Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe, would suit up in the red and white winged wheel uniform of the Detroit Red Wings. Howe would score his first NHL goal that evening, helping the Red Wings earn a 3-3 tie in the season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs. There would be many more to come. Presented here is a lot of four photographs from Howe’s rookie season in the NHL. The first, measuring in at 14” x 11”, shows where it all began and is inscribed as such by Mr. Hockey himself with the inscription “First NHL Game, 10-16-1946” in beautiful silver ink to go along with his instantly recognizable signature. The next pair of photos depict the future legend enjoying life as a rookie in the NHL with a serious action shot and a jubilant Howe featured. Both measuring in at 16” x 20”, each has been signed by Howe in blue marker and inscribed with both “Mr. Hockey” and “1946 Rookie Season” the one features Howe’s rookie #17 in the inscription. Lastly, is a black and white team photo of the 1946-47 Detroit Red Wings featuring the young Howe in the back row, fourth from left. Measuring in at 20” x 16”, the piece is once again signed on the bottom part of the image by Howe and has the “Mr. Hockey” and “1946 Rookie Season” inscriptions. All four photos in the lot present beautifully with the autographs displaying beautifully with no flaws whatsoever. These remain ready for framing and display in your collection.
