Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/1/2022
Competing against and dominating 20-year-olds while still in his mid-teens, Wayne Gretzky earned Rookie of the Year honours in the Metro Junior B Hockey League in 1975–76, and led the Seneca Nationals the following season with 72 points in 32 regular-season games. The Nationals would win the 1977 Metro championship, with The Great One scoring 75 points including 40 goals in just 23 playoff matches. Hailing from the collection of Shawn Chaulk, and originally acquired through collector Kevin McGuffin who in turn was gifted this and the other Seneca Nationals items offered in this auction by Toronto Nationals employee Gary Folkes (with the Nationals for a number of years, Folkes held positions with the club such as manager, assistant coach, and statistician), we have a stick used by Gretzky during the 1976-77 Seneca Nationals season. A Louisville Slugger model with “Toronto Nats” over both sides of the shaft (the Toronto Nationals were renamed the Seneca Nationals in 1976-77), “140” is stamped to the upper shaft, with “9” handwritten on both the shaft and knob end as well “Gretzky” having been penned on the middle part of the shaft (Wayne wore #9 with Seneca, and started wearing #99 during his time with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds). The back of the shaft features a large blacked out section that was done in marker. The original blade tape is no longer present while the knob features the original white tape once applied by Wayne himself. The stick also features both of the original striping accents mostly intact. Exhibiting good game-use with wear and marks to the blade and lower shaft, the heel of the stick showcases a slight crack, with chipping and a bit of material loss along the top edge of the blade. Overall, the stick is remarkable in that it serves as one of the earliest models used by the game’s all-time greatest player. An LOA from Shawn Chaulk will accompany.
