O-Pee-Chee ushered-in the 1980s with another 396-card set, with the near set leading here featuring EX-MT cards of longtime friends and all-time greats Mark Messier and Wayne Gretzky. The Messier card (miscut on the back) leads a big rookie card class of 70, with that of Ray Bourque affected by poor centering and a diagonal mark/bend, mostly in the upper left quadrant – not a conventional crease but contributing to a VG assessment. Corner wear/touches/light dings are observed when checking out the “other” five Gretzky entries and a Mike Gartner RC (EX), making for EX-ish (VG-EX to EX+) verdicts – expect the same among the rest, stored in older 9-pocket pages, with EX-MT-or-better representatives also to come upon. The cards are sorted by team and not in numerical order, with the Islanders’ Glenn Resch not present but… Chico autographed his ’81-82 issue. That binder yields overall sharper cards, with Paul Coffey (EX-MT+) and Jari Kurri (EX+) rookies leading the first-year contingent and 106-Gretzky at EX-MT. Star and random pulls have us telling you to anticipate plenty of EX-MT and NM-or-higher characteristics, with light toning on the backs to be aware and a touch more evident on the upper backs of the cards stored in the pages’ top row. All checklists and team checklists are unmarked in the two sets, except for ’80-81 216-Canadiens. As always, perusing and several options await.
