Among the highlights of our consignor’s terrific stash of unopened material is this mesmerizing box of hockey card packs from 1985-86, the season that collectors first saw a budding teenage superstar by the name of Mario Lemieux appear on O-Pee-Chee cards. Upon the young phenom’s 100-point rookie campaign, (a season earlier), the Penguins’ fortune began to rise and thanks to Mario’s prolific performances in ensuing years, Pittsburgh won back-to-back Stanley Cups, helping to propel ‘85-86 O-Pee-Chee cards of the Montreal native to coveted status. The 48 packs contained in this inviting box each contain seven cards, with Al MacInnis’ rookie card, four different cards of Gretzky, a Lemieux League Leader card and the card issued following Pelle Lindbergh’s death among those involved in OPC’s 264-card effort. Box bottom cards first appeared in '85-86, with the panel here picturing Ruotsalainen, Sutter, Tonelli and Wilson, although the images are partially covered by two BBCE identifying stickers. They were affixed to the shrink wrap after the unopened specialist examined and deemed the packs unopened. There is some paper loss on the box top, the latter picturing Pat Lafontaine, with the jagged die-cut area above Pat’s image partially popped and small creases near the upper edge. Creasing above Jari Kurri’s image on the right side panel, a small piece of scotch tape on the back panel and light dings/wear to the bottom’s corners are also noteworthy, although all rather insignificant in our eyes. The prospect of a high grade Mario RC….or two! overwhelmingly trumps it all.
