Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023

Captivating, mysterious, interest piquing and a daunting assembly to put together in completion, the cards simply known as the V129s since their manufacturer is not even known(!), are, in terms of scarcity/rarity, considered by most to be second only to Sweet Caporal postcards among pre-war cardboard collectibles which picture hockey players. A rare opportunity presents itself here via this collection of thirteen (13) 1933-34 Anonymous V129 hockey cards that includes some of the best names to ever play the game. Led by a trio of freshly graded PSA offerings that include the cards of King Clancy (PSA VG+ 3.5), Larry Aurie (RC – PSA VG 3) and Bun Cook (RC – PSA VG-EX 4), an older style PSA slab containing the rookie card of Ott Heller (PSA EX 5) is also include as are a trio of older KSA graded offerings that includes Bill Brydge (RC – KSA EX 5), Murray Murdock (KSA GOOD 2) and Danny Cox (RC – KSA VGE 4). For the six (6) remaining cards, all found in raw ungraded form and falling towards the lower end of the grading scale, an example of Cooney Weiland’s RC is included and in the range of PR to FR condition due to multiple creases over both sides, corner and edge wear, toning and a stain over the front, while the first-year cardboard of Butch Keeling is a bit better off, around the range of FR with a couple of creases over the front that can’t be seen on the reverse as well as even toning and light-to-moderate corner wear. In the category of FR to G we have RC examples for Red Dutton and Busher Jackson that both remain crease free but sport heavier toning than their counterparts with the pairing both having corner wear/dings and edge wear and surface residue. The last two cards, including an additional copy of Butch Keeling’s RC as well as the cardboard debut of Charlie Sands, are both viewed as being in the grade scope of GOOD as both remain crease free (the Sands card does have a sort of surface wrinkle on the reverse at the lower left corner but not a crease) but have moderate toning (Sands’ card shows spotting/foxing along the bottom as well) as well as corner wear/dings and edge wear with the reverses both quite nice. Some beautiful seldomly seen pre-war specimens, don’t let these pass you and your all-important vintage collection by!
It must be noted that the grading standards followed by KSA may not correspond to those currently employed by PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of this piece through any of those services, then, would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
