Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/13/2022
Two dozen cards, all but two of them considered rookie cards, followed up O-Pee-Chee’s initial (48-card) release of 1933-34 – what a swell time for kids and fans it must have been, with other gum companies also getting involved with producing hockey cards. The colorful and very pleasing gathering here is led by the Series “B” leader in terms of importance/value, Aurele Joliat, with card #50 recently arriving back from PSA where it received an EX-MT 6 verdict, making the example a Pop 11 with just eight similar cards edging it in PSA history. With evidence of once having been stored in an OPC album is Tiny Thompson’s RC, still attractive at VG 3. Attractive is also how we rate almost all of the raw representatives, with #66-Bob Gracie downright impressive and superior to the Joliat; EX-MT+ is our assessment. Three commons at EX and five at VG-EX are crease-free, while a dozen have similar visual appeal but are dropped to VG+ by a subtle, not-always-easily-detectable light crease. The group features rookie cards of Hall of Famers Babe Siebert, Ebbie Goodfellow and Bun Cook, with goalies John Ross Roach, Bill Beveridge and Dave Kerr also notable. One card, 70-Blair exhibits uneven toning on the front (from album storage) and a small stain on the back. It should be noted that some cards measure shorter than others but they’re the same size as the Joliat, while others mirror the “taller” Thompson example, with both encapsulated cards to arrive in scratch-free PSA holders. The holders of the Stanley Cup that season were the Rangers but it was Chicago copping Lord Stanley’s precious silverware at season’s end.
