Not all, but many of the most important rookie cards of the 1970s and '80s, all of them O-Pee-Chee productions, highlight this years-in-the-making stash, complemented by RCs from the ‘90s and star cards. The collection dates back to a good-looking’69-70 Tony Esposito RC, lowered to VG+ by a small light corner crease, with a ’70-71 Bobby Clarke rookie at VG. A ’71-72 Marcel Dionne RC is an attractive EX+ (OC), with coaches Scotty Bowman (VG-EX) and Don Cherry (2)(EX+, VG) contributing (along with Gainey, Shutt and McDonald RCs from ’74-75) and Mike Bossy’s (EX) rookie rounding out the more important ‘70s material. Off-centered but otherwise EX-MT are ’80-81 Mark Messier and Ray Bourque cards, with a Paul Coffey RC at EX. You’ll understand that with the scope of the lot, we cannot get into the grades of each of the remaining entries but they do not include any creased examples and are mostly EX-MT-or-better, with a smaller percentage at EX or EX+. We’ll go chronologically, starting with ’70-71 Cashman and Magnuson. Then it’s ’73-74 Schultz, ’76-77 Trottier and Williams, ’78-79 Taylor, Wilson and Sutter, ’79-80 Smith, ’80-81 Gartner and Propp, ’81-82 Kurri, Savard, Moog, Murphy, Stastny, Lowe and Ciccarelli, ’82-83 Fuhr, Francis, Hawerchuk and Mullen, ’83-84 Stevens, Carbonneau and Housley, ’84-85 Gilmour, Neely, Chelios, LaFontaine, Andreychuk and Barrasso, ’85-86 MacInnis and Muller, ’87-88 Robitaille, Oates, Hextall, Vernon, C. Lemieux, Richer and Damphousse, ’88-89 Shanahan, Turgeon and Nieuwendyk and ’89-90 Sakic, Leetch and Fleury.
The early-‘90s RC contingent is led by Jaromir Jagr, with two Upper Deck rookies looking sharp but with a corner ding affecting an OPC Premier RC. Other RC representatives include duplication at times and feature Fedorov, Roenick, Modano, Brodeur, Selanne, Forsberg, Hasek (multiples from several companies), Lidstrom, LeClair, Zetterberg and others, joined by cards of stars Gretzky, Lemieux, Sakic, Bure, Yzerman, Hull and some of the aforementioned. Cards of Super Mario (100+) come around the most often, most of them from the ‘90s but with 21st-century material also present. Some older star card action is also notable, with Bobby Orr leading the way. Bobby’s regular OPC issues are ’70-71 (G), ’72-73 (EX), ’77-78 (EX) and ’78-79 (VG-EX), while Gordie Howe’s ’71-72 Special Collector’s Card (VG+) and ’79-80 #175 (EX+) are also noteworthy. After that, it’s a mostly-‘90s grab bag with a few pleasant surprises to come upon. Rookie cards are always in demand – you’ll score dozens here.
