Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/27/2021
All sorts of alluring elements are involved in this gathering of 1969-70 O-Pee-Chee cards and inserts, with mostly EX to NM contributors to tell you about, along with seemingly standard condition exceptions. A Tony Esposito rookie card is off-centered but otherwise NM-MT, while Bobby Orr’s regular (#24) card was to have been described as NM until we spotted a small, very light back crease that sends it to VG+. Bobby’s Norris Trophy card and a Serge Savard RC (both VG+) similarly have a small light crease rising up from the middle of the bottom edge, with 212-Orr All-Star at VG with two small corner creases. Refreshingly, Gordie Howe’s Mr. Hockey card has “193” on the back and is EX+, with Gordie’s regular issue at EX-MT and his All-Star just a tad lower with a diamond cut. Also less-often-seen is Phil Esposito’s Art Ross/Hart Trophy version with “205” on the front and “214” on the reverse, as are the 226-Vezina Trophy and 228-Norris Trophy variations with yellow script on the backs. One of nine cards with evidence of having a stamp insert removed is 70-Hull (otherwise VG-EX), with a miscut 189-Sawchuk (o/w EX-MT) also to note. Two unmarked checklists are among the attractive entries; #31-2nd Series (EX-MT+) is one of the nicest checklists we recall handling from the era, while a little smidgen of something on the front of 132-1st Series affects it (o/w EX-MT). We’ll let the new owner decide about the (removable) wax staining on the front of the last card; 231-The Stanley Cup. We’ve mentioned the most notable flaws but should also tell you that you’ll enjoy coming upon the plentiful amount of EX-MT to NM representatives, with NM+ and NM-MTs also present. Also, we’ve never seen a set of 12 mini-card albums in such impressive condition; other than a nick in the cover of the Chicago example, we cannot detect a single flaw. The stamp inserts meanwhile are also pleasing, (most are crease-free) with the eight which show evidence of having once been pasted not including any of the superstars. All sorts of fun/enjoyment is possible here.
