Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021

The first African-born NHL player and long-time Capitals netminder, Olaf Kolzig saw action with Washington in three different decades! This goalie mask was worn in training camp by Kolzig in 2001-02. The mask retains its original padding and strapping including added Velcro and cloth forehead accessory. Featuring amazing artwork with a fire-breathing Godzilla wreaking havoc on the US capital, the chin section has “Zilla”, while the back head piece repeats it along with “Olie the Goalie”. Made by maker Dillon’s, there’s notations on the interior of his along with his added decal. In excellent condition, the mask does exhibit some sweat staining along the forehead section and a few minor scratches. Originally sold with a receipt of purchase from the Piney Orchard ProShop which served as the old Washington Capitals practice facility, that receipt stated that the mask was used by Kolzig in training camp. We also must stress the quality of the artwork, as very few NHL masks feature this intricate and detailed level of aesthetically pleasing imagery. One of the nicest designed NHL masks we’ve handled.
