Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/26/2021
Earning his reputation as a ferocious goal scorer with an equally venomous temper, Maurice Richard topped the Montreal Canadiens in both points and penalty minutes at the conclusion of the 1952-53 regular season, and led the club past Chicago and Boston in the playoffs to help capture the franchise’s 7th Stanley Cup championship. This important vintage lumber was used by the iconic Rocket, and adding to the extreme desirability, the stick has been team-signed and most likely saw use during the Stanley Cup playoffs. A CCM Pattern-Made model with “9” stamped to the upper shaft, additional stamps grace each side of the lower shaft from the Habs team supplier, Raymond Hardware. The original black tape remains over the knob, with the blade tape changed – but this appears period, most likely sometime shortly after use. 22 have signed in mixed ink including 11 deceased HOFers, with the Rocket, along with Lach, Geoffrion, Harvey, Moore, Johnson, Bouchard, Olmstead, Blake, Irvin and Frank Selke. The additional signers include Meger, Gamble, Curry, Mosdell, Reay, St Laurent, MacPherson, Davis, Mazur, McNeil, trainer Hector Dubois and one other. A number of the signatures are bunched-up, with a few worn or light including the Rocket. We should also note that due to the inclusion of
Lorne Davis and Eddie Mazur who only played for the Canadiens in the playoffs in 1952-53 (no regular season games) as well as Billy Reay (who's last season with the Habs was 1952-53), the stick was most likely used in the playoffs by Richard. Marks are present over the shaft from game-use, with the blade completely solid, with a small age crack visible beneath the tape at the toe. This is one of the nicer Richard game sticks we have ever handled. An LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany.
