Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021

Talk about an obvious choice to appear on O-Pee-Chee hockey card wax boxes in 1982-83, Wayne Gretzky the previous season had annihilated Phil Esposito's single-season goal record (76), lighting the lamp 92! times, while totalling an unheard of 212 points, in just his third NHL season. He only(!) had 196 points the season that kids were spending a quarter for a pack of cards, with 10 cards in each of the 43 packs offered here. Wayne appears on nine different cards in the 396-card set, with rookie cards of Grant Fuhr, Ron Francis and Dale Hawerchuk headlining the rookie card lineup. The display box and packs here are part of our consignor's important and impressive collection of unopened material, with the complete boxes sent to BBCE and certified/confirmed unopened. We've checked the top three packs in each stack here and can report that none have been searched/re-sealed, with pack condition being sharp, near mint-or-better. The box itself once had an extra piece of tape applied to the top/front panel, with the die-cut section no longer intact around the 25-cent indicator, part of the top edge and down the right side, but still intact up the left side and around the corner. Corner dings, a light 4-inch vertical crease in the box top (in the red to the right of Gretzky), a notch in the box top's left edge and creasing in the right panel are notable but all rather insignificant in our eyes. They're drawn to the image of a young Gretz, with the thought of high grade grading possibilities coming to mind upon some fun pack-busting.
