Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/26/2021
While it’s hard for any modern hockey adherent to imagine netminders roaming the crease bare-faced, that was entirely the case for the majority of the sport’s existence. Originating from the formative days of head gear protection, we have a rare circa late-1950s Louch-style plexiglass goal mask, with this unique example’s rarity compounded as it has been attached to a seldom-seen vintage 1940s W.H. Brine Co leather helmet. With a girth of almost 8” across, the plexiglass mask feature’s no original strapping, with this removed to attach the mask to the vintage red W.H. Brine Co leather helmet, with company label over the forehead. The masks original chin padding is intact, with the strapping to the leather helmet in place, with heavy salting to the clasps. There are also numerous scratches to the plexiglass and wear to the helmet from use including minor sweat staining, with a name handwritten to both the helmet and chin pad.
