Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021

Here’s an opportunity for you, not quite like anything we recall handling in the past; five complete O-Pee-Chee sets from the 1980s, with each and every card in an ancient, thick soft (penny) sleeve. Pulled key cards from an ’80-81 set include EX-MT examples of Mark Messier and Mike Gartner rookie cards, Gretzky’s second-year card (OC, miscut on the back) and 87-Gretzky All-Star, while a little welt in the Ray Bourque RC sends it to VG+. The rest appear similar or better, although inspection of each card is not possible at this time, because of time. The ’80-81s look quite sharp, with smooth edges as an attribute and NM-or-better cards definitely dominating and rookie cards of Coffey (NM), Kurri (EX-MT), Savard (EX-MT), Moog (EX+) and Stastny (NM) the most notable, while 1-Bourque (G)(crease, corner dings) is a condition exception. An EX-MT Grant Fuhr RC is off-centered and heads an ’82-83 assembly and we can tell from RCs of Hawerchuk and Francis and other cards that some intermittent bottom corners throughout suffered from being put into the tight-fitting sleeves used for the ’82-83s and ’83-84s, although the flaws look to be less plentiful in the latter set. Thankfully, looser-fitting softies were used for the ’84-85 set, allowing us to report of a NM-MT Yzerman rookie, with RCs of Gilmour, Neely and Chelios similar and two extra Gretzky cards a swell bonus. Checklists throughout (and team checklists, when present) are unmarked, with Wayne and his Oilers teammates coming around numerous times – this is a great chance to score a run of five sets with one swoop.
