It’s always enjoyable to check out the popping colors and aesthetically-pleasing aspects of Topps’ first hockey card issue, with a beautiful rendition of Gordie Howe highlighting both the star power and condition here. Card #8, picturing the perennial scoring champ of the day and leader of the Stanley Cup champion Red Wings, received an appropriate mark of EX 5 from PSA and is joined by VG 3 examples of Terry Sawchuk and Gump Worsley. The accompanying raw cards show handling but no abuse and minimal creases, with the majority either mirroring the Sawchuk and Worsley cards or a notch or two higher at VG+ or VG-EX. Just one card, 25-Flaman looks to make it to EX, while creased condition exceptions or with enough corner wear to drop them below VG are 18-Mohns RC, 24-Prystai, 26-Rollins, 32-Camille Henry RC, 35-McKenney RC, 37-Jim Henry and 44-Irwin RC, with a bit of glue-like residue on the back of 49-Quackenbush. All-in-all, a rather uniform condition assembly, with just 56-Laprade needed to be tracked down to complete it. Thanks to Topps’ initial hockey effort, the Red Wings, Rangers, Black Hawks and Bruins never looked so good!
