Entering the record books during just his second NHL season as the youngest player in history to be named as permanent team captain, Connor McDavid received the honour at the beginning of his sophomeore season, on Oct 5, 2016, when the young superstar joined the long line of venerated players who have all proudly donned the “C” for the Edmonton Oilers including Mark Messier, Jason Smith, and of course, the one and only Wayne Gretzky. This historically important photo-matched Oilers jersey was worn by McDavid in 2016-17 during his first pre-season game as Oilers team captain on Oct 6, 2016. First worn with the alternate’s “A” on Oct 2nd where he scored a goal vs Los Angeles, the jersey was then worn with the “C” for the first time during a two-goal contest on Oct 6th vs Winnipeg, and was worn for a third time as captain on Oct 8th – a two-point night vs Vancouver, and has been photo-matched to each game.
A label with “56” sizing is affixed to the collar, with embroidered Reebok and NHL crests over the reverse neckline and bottom hem respectively. Styled with the familiar oil drop team crest, the navy V-neck has been accented with layered tri-colour tackle twill sleeve and verso numbers, with the captain’s “C” sewn to the left breast and Rogers Place Inaugural Season Patch just above the right breast. Sporting light game-use with no discernible marks, there is a small circular area roughly the size of a dime just above the right cuff that shows stretching to the material. This is very small and barely noticeable, but has been mentioned for strict accuracy.
As previously mentioned, the jersey has been photo-matched to each of the three contests it was worn in including Oct 2nd, Oct 6th and Oct 8th. For Oct 2nd – Getty Image #612073336 shows the jersey hanging in the locker room, and has been matched to the two short blue threads at the bottom edge of the "9" on the left sleeve, to the small blue thread in the bottom interior portion of the top section of the "9", and to the grouping of short orange threads in the white stripe above the "97". For Oct 6th - Getty Image #613007240 has been matched to the two short blue threads at the bottom edge of the "9" on the left sleeve, while Getty Image #613007242 has been matched to the diagonal fold line in the upper portion on the "9" on the back of the jersey, and Getty Images #613007244 has been matched to the two short blue threads at the bottom edge of the "9" on the left sleeve, and to the grouping of short orange threads in the white stripe above the "97". Also, Getty Image #613007246 has been matched to the two short blue threads at the bottom edge of the "9" on the left sleeve, and to the diagonal fold line in the upper portion on the "9" on the back of the jersey, while Getty Image #613010504 has been matched to the two short blue threads bottom edge of the "9" on the left sleeve, the small blue thread in the bottom interior portion in the top portion of the "9", and to the grouping of short orange threads in the white stripe above the "97". Lastly for Oct 6th, a pair of numeric images has been matched to the two short blue threads at the bottom edge of the "9" on the left sleeve, to the small blue thread in the bottom interior portion in the top portion of the "9", to the three yellowish points in the threads in the upper portion of the "7" and to the grouping of short orange threads in the white stripe above the "97" on the first photo, as well as to the loose small black thread on the NHL shield logo on the front collar, to a small loose orange thread on the left shoulder side of the collar and to a small loose white thread on the lower edge of the Inaugural Season patch. For Oct 8th - Getty Image #613452516 has been matched to the two short blue threads and the long white thread on the bottom edge of the "9" on the left sleeve, with Getty Image #613448376 matched to the long loose thread on the bottom edge of the "9" and to the small loose thread on the bottom of the "7" on the right sleeve. The Oilers “Set 1” team patch is affixed to the inside hem along with a MeiGray crest numbered “N02553”, and according to their population report, the desirable jersey is a "Blue Set 1 w/C, w/ Rogers Place Inaugural Season Patch - Preseason Only" and "Worn 10/2/16, 10/6/16 & 10/8/16" specimen. An LOA from the Oilers will accompany, and we should note that the Oct 8th game is not listed.
