We’ve looked, we’ve marveled and now we get to describe this absolutely gorgeous set of 1961-62 Topps hockey cards which features stars, important rookie cards, action cards, coaches cards, team cards and Topps’ first-ever hockey checklist – talk about a fabulous lineup! Two of Chicago’s greatest sports legends, Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita, headline a group of 25 to have achieved lofty MINT 9 recognition, with six of them, including that of fellow (at that time) defending Stanley Cup champion Glenn Hall bettered by none on their respective “lines” of the PSA Population Report. Also chart-toppers are 9-Toppazzini, 15-Kurtenbach RC, 25-Vasko, 37-DeJordy RC and 47-Spencer RC, with most notable other 9s being a trio of Rangers; 45-Harvey, 50-Worsley and 51-Howell – awesome. Five slabbed NM-MT+ 8.5 include 4-Dallas Smith RC, 53-Bathgate and 22-Bathgate/Hall Action. There are 32 NM-MT 8 contributors, highlighted by Jean Ratelle and Rod Gilbert RCs, Bucyk, Pilote, team cards of the Bruins and Rangers and the last numbered card, the aforementioned checklist. Just four cards do not make it to NM-MT, with 1-Watson, 63-Rangers Team and 65-Worsley Action at NM 7 joined by 64-Worsley/Meissner Action at EX-MT 6. All of the components’ grades and pop numbers may be viewed, of course, on the PSA Set Registry, where the assembly’s 8.40 set rating places it 7th on the Current Finest list for ’61-62 Topps representatives. Also cracking the Top 10 All-Time Finest list, this effort deserves considerable consideration, to say the least – what a chance for lovers of high grade material.
