Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2021

Smooth edges strike the beholder of the Wayne Gretzky rookie card that headlines this batch of 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee cards, with a slight diamond cut and a light corner ding (lower left) also observed and noteworthy. Graded EX 5 by PSA, famous card #18 is joined by 270 other entries, so completing the ensemble or breaking it up will be among your options. It wasn’t the best of days at the factory or afterwards for many of the cards, with intermittent diamond cuts (185-Hull, 150-Dryden)(both VG) and handling and corner wear (230-Bossy (G)) spotted while perusing the two thin binders in which the cards are housed. An Oilers team logo/checklist is marked and has a “4” penned to the front, with marks also on all but one of the team checklist cards that are on hand. There are cards that mirror the Gretzky RC but they’re definitely the minority, with 90 duplicates similar and three Semenko RCs noteworthy but in the VG neighborhood. Gordie Howe, Smith and Simmer RCs, the three checklists, the Jets and Whalers logos, Lafleur and all of the “leaders” cards at the start are among the cards not present. Wayne (in a scratch-free PSA holder) is the focal point, for sure, with the others pretty much an afterthought.
