One of the most expensive Olympic Games ever held at the time, the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary featured a record 57 nations competing with 1,423 athletes participating. Petro-Canada served as one of the event’s biggest sponsors, with this majestic “Share the Flame” limited-edition bronze statue originating from a high ranking Petro-Canada corporate executive in 1988. A faithful reproduction of the life-size “Share the Flame” statue located in front of the Frank King Olympic Visitors Centre at the Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, it was sculpted by hometown artist Vilem Zach and donated by Petro-Canada. At approx 18” in height and with a weight of just under 30 lbs, the sculpture is mounted to a 2” oval-shaped wooden base with affixed gold coloured plaques. Featuring a pair of male and female Canadian athletes in winter clothing; with each in fluid movement, clutching and extended the sacred Olympic torch, “Share the Flame By V. Zach” is engraved on the right plaque, while the left sports “Olympic Torch Relay” and “November 17, 1987 – February 13, 1988” in both English and French. The artist has signed the bottom reverse just above the limited-edition number of “32/50”.
Exhibiting just light surface wear throughout from its 30-plus-year-vintage, dark felt is affixed to the underside, with the base just slightly loose.
