There will do doubt be numerous bidders – from rookie card collectors to speculators to those just getting involved in the rookie card frenzy - gunning for this ultra-alluring stash of Upper Deck’s famous “Young Guns.” Think about it; a two-decades-in-the-making monster box with dozens and dozens, actually countless possibilities - wow. Okay, now for the lowdown, it goes as follows and in chronological order, with approximate totals and key RCs noted, with some duplication also to mention. Leading-off are (53) from 2000-01 (Heatley, Havlat), followed by (31) 2001-02 entries (Btyzgalov (facing his right)). Among (68) from 2002-03 are Spezza and Sharp RCs, with Marc-André Fleury and two of Brent Burns highlighting (39) 2003-04 entries. The NHL lockout did a number on 2004-05 hockey cards, with Young Gun Legends and Young Gun Retro cards joining RCs of Cammy Granato and Alexander Ragulin among 19 cards from that year. Much better of course was the Young Guns class of 2005-06, led here by Lundqvist, Keith (2), Parise, Getzlaff, Perry, Carter and Ward, out of over 100 cards. From 2006-07 are 79 cards including Kopitar, Weber, Letang, Pavelski and Radulov, while Patrick Kane and Tuuka Rask rookies headline a group of 100+ from 2007-08, with Krejci, Lucic and Ryan also contributing. The 2008-09 “YG” lineup (of 87) stars Stamkos, Giroux, Wheeler, Oshie, Peitrangelo and Voracek, with the next year (2009-10) highlighted by the presence of Tavares, Benn, Couture, O’Reilly and Van Riemsdyk, among over six dozen. After a sparse (11)(Skinner, Bobrovsky) representation from 2010-11, Scheifele, Landeskog, Zibanejad, Nugent-Hopkins, Josi and Couturrier bolster a strong contingent (32) from 2011-12, followed by (18) 2012-13 rookies, the latter group with no standouts. That changes with (44) 2013-14 RCs, including those of Barkov (2), Rielly, Forsberg, Tarasenko, F. Anderson, S. Jones and Monahan. From 2014-15 are Johnny Hockey (Gaudreau), Horvat, Nurse, Binnington, Kuznetsov and Ekblad, while 2015-16 notables are Eichel, Panarin, Rantanen, Larkin, Hellebuyck and Ehlers. Alluring from 2016-17 are RCs of Laine, Aho, Nylander, Barzal, Point, Demko, Connor, Konecny (2), Chabot and Matthew Tkachuk (2), with the 2017-18 roster bolstered by Boeser, DeBrincat, Hischier, Necas, Patrick and Keller. Emerging thus far from 2018-19 Young Guns are Hart, Kotkaniemi, Brady Tkachuk, Heiskanen, Dahlin, Svechnikov, Hintz and Batherson, while 2019-20 Young Guns already grabbing the attention of hockey observers are Cale Makar, Quinn and Jack Hughes, Kubalik and Merzlikins. The beauty of the last five years is that there are numerous players yet to “break out”, with a hot stretch or season sure to send their cards soaring...and, there are either more than or close to 100 cards from each season from 2015-16 to 2019-2020. There’s even a little 2020-21 Series 1 action (21), with Vanecek and Byram (2) notable. The cards look to have been very well cared for over the years, with surely numerous potential 9s and 10s to be discovered. What a thought-provoking opportunity – good luck securing this interesting hoard.
