Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/30/2021
Some legendary hockey figures contribute to this interesting lot and we figure it would be great for “type” collectors (and rookie card enthusiasts) who have yet to enter the pre-war card world or who are relatively new to it, with eleven different sets represented – cool. The rookie card of hockey icon Eddie Shore is an attraction in itself, with card #3 from O-Pee-Chee’s 1933-34 issue a respectable low grade (P-F) entry, with rounded corners and a few peripheral creases but no major flaws. The card of Shore’s longtime Boston blueline partner, Lionel Hitchman (VG), is best of the lot and joined by three low grade (P) ’33-34 OPC RCs; 26-Touhey, 43-Phillips and 47-Wasnie, with a ’33-34 Canadian Chewing Gum roster comprised of five and including rookie cards of Ace Bailey, Charlie Gardiner and Lorne Chabot, as well as those of Marty Burke and Bob Gracie. A foursome of ’33-34 Ice Kings include a roughed-up Syd Howe RC, along with 21-Gagnon, 35-Patterson and 46-Lepine, with the latter being the only one with a bilingual back and all considered RCs. The ’37-38 World Wide Gum issue is the other with multiple entries (3), highlighted by a card of longtime Detroit “boss” Jack Adams. Chicago manager Bill Stewart’s rookie is the last numbered card (135) in the set, with 56-Blair also present. Singles from the following sets are also low grade: ’24-25 Maple Crispette (20-George Carroll RC), ’24-25 Dominion Chocolate (101-Bill Brydge), ’33-34 V129 (10-Bill Thoms RC), ’33-34 Hamilton Gum (36-Alex Levinsky RC) and ’35-36 OPC (84-Nick Metz RC). Nifty complements are 1930s Diamond Match issues, with no matches in a (silver) matchbook of Pit Lepine and the striker missing from a pasted (tan) matchbook cover picturing Howie Morenz, the image less common than another of the hockey icon in his Black Hawks uniform. Talk about possibilities here!
