Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
We hockey “heads” are familiar with the great photos of NHL stars of the Original Six era that appeared in “Weekend Magazine” across Canada in the 1950s and ‘60s, while collectors of Canadian Football League material are well aware of the comparative infrequency in which similar CFL pictures surface. And in complete magazine and complete set form? Now, we’re talking extremely scarce…and extremely beautiful, with the artwork of former NFL and CFL lineman turned graphic artist Dewitt “Tex” Coulter masterfully depicting a star player from each of the nine teams in the promotion’s third and last season, 1959. The run of complete magazines here has “The Edmonton Journal” on the covers, begins with an August 15th issue and concludes with that of October 10th. The lineup, in order of appearance, features Winnipeg’s Jim Van Pelt, Hamilton’s Ron Howell, Edmonton’s Jackie Parker, Toronto’s Dick Shatto, Calgary’s Don Luzzi, Montreal’s Sam Etcheverry, Ottawa’s Bob Simpson, B.C.’s Byron Bailey and Saskatchewan’s Jack Hill. Accompanying write-ups by Andy O’Brien and a black and white action shot below the paintings also contribute, with most magazines exhibiting only light handling and wear, with no unsightly cover creases to report – these are nice…and special. The new owner will get to marvel at the football images and have a chance to be entertained for hours by the rest of the content, with killer ads and interesting articles galore. You will be content, for sure.
