Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021

Featuring the famous Indian head team crest proudly sported by the NHL’s Windy City and distinguishable from the parent club by the gorgeous “D” tomahawk logos over each shoulder, the Dallas Black Hawks earned four Adams Cup championships in the CPHL/CHL during their tenure, and served as the primary affiliate for the Chicago Black Hawks until 1976. This Dallas jersey hails from 1967-69, with three different players wearing the #5 jersey during the era including Ray McKay (1967-68 - 58 reg season games + 5 playoffs games, 1968-69 - 61 reg season games), and according to our consignor, Matt Ravlich (1968-69 – 9 reg season games + 8 playoffs games) and Roger Wilson (1968-69 - 4 reg season games). A frayed and partially-detached Gunzo’s label with their Berwyn address is affixed to the collar along with a small fly tag, with the jersey measuring-out to roughly a size 52. Styled with the aforementioned classic Indian head team crest with chain-stitched detailing, “5” appears sewn to the sleeves and verso in single white twill, with matching chain-stitched tomahawk crests over each shoulder. A detailed LOA document will accompany this attractive scarcity.
Dated by the Gunzo’s tag that last saw use in 1968-69, the Berwyn address was changed after a fire in 1970 as the retailer moved to a River Forest location in Illinois, with this address then listed on their labeling. Based on this, the jersey would have been worn in either the 1967-68 Dallas Black Hawks inaugural season or in their 1968-69 CHL championship season, but it is unknown if it would have been worn in both seasons, with the light to moderate game wear suggesting single-season use. A couple large stick marks are visible over the lower front, with a few additional marks present over each sleeve and on the upper section of the reverse “5”. There is also pilling to the interior, with a bit of red paint transfer and discolouration to the reverse hem.
